While other people stop and go home because the weather decides to snow, you continue to brave the elements and keep putting one foot in front of the other to reach your goals. For dedicated Gucci like you, the grind never stops.

That said, it is wise to exercise caution when running outside during the winter months. Having the proper snow running shoes that provide support and protection from cold and slick surfaces is very important.

To help narrow down your best options, we’ve secured models of snow running shoes available in the market. After that, we tested and analyzed each of them on the road, on the trails, and inside our shoe testing lab to make our top recommendations. In this article, we highlight the snow running shoes that truly wowed us during our testing.

How we test running shoes

As a team of wear-testers and editors here at CerbeShops, we tested and evaluated every model on this list.

Ideal for decorating your sandals or even your favorite bag:

  • Purchasing all the shoes we test with our own money to ensure a 100% honest review.
  • Performing a battery of mechanical tests inside our lab, which includes cutting the shoes into pieces and analyzing over 30 parameters, from midsole softness, durability, outsole traction, and many others.
  • Going for short and long runs in cold temperatures and snowy conditions, averaging 30-40 miles on each model. We record every bit of valuable information we get from our rigorous wear tests.

Running sneakers featuring open mesh uppers with underlay support for breathable comfort for snow overall

Speedgoat 5 keeps our winter runs steady, fast and comfortable. It’s a reliable shoe that handles any terrain and distance effortlessly with its traction, light nature and pillowy cushion. It gives us the confidence to conquer icy paths — making it our top snow running shoe.

Its Vibram outsole ticks all the requirements of a protective snow shoe. Its grip is thanks to the 3.0-mm lugs that bite through slippery ice — keeping our runs steady. It feels indestructible — keeping our feet protected as validated by our durometer with an 84.5 HC measurement (85.1 HC average).

With speed in its name, it handles fast paces well with its light nature. At 9.8 oz (277g), it’s as light as road-running shoes (9.5 oz / 268g) while holding the advantages of a trail shoe. Its flexible midsole flows with our feet — promoting agility and smooth toe-offs.

We can go far with its buttery cushion that feels like stepping on fresh snow. It’s one of the softest trail shoes at 11.0 HA (59.9% softer than average). Even after the 20-minute freezer test, the foam remains 34.3% softer than the average at room temperature. This confirms the velvety sensation of the cushion in cold weather.

We recommend wearing warm socks with this pair since it’s upper lets the cold breeze in.

Running sneakers featuring open mesh uppers with underlay support for breathable comfort for snow with a wide toebox

Sneakers KARL LAGERFELD KL62530 White Lthr W Pink?

We found a pair that bites through ice, keeps us warm in the winter and has a roomy fit. Lone Peak 7 has solid traction, an upper that can handle cold temperatures and a forgiving toebox. This cements its position as the best snow running shoe with a wide toebox.

With its square shape, the toebox has one of the most accommodating platforms for wide feet and thick socks. Though its width is slightly below average, its design allows the feet to swell. Keeping our feet in place is a gusseted tongue that locks down well.

We tested this shoe against cold and slick surfaces and it performed extremely well! The outsole is grippy, avoiding unwanted slips and injuries. Its sticky rubber lugs measure 3.4 mm deep, which explains why we remain steady in snow. They're patterned to act as brakes on slippery slopes, allowing us to remain in control.

Its score on our breathability test is 3/5 vs. the average of 3.4. This makes it a great running companion in the winter as it keeps our feet toasty and warm.

The tradeoff of having the grippy outsole of a trail shoe is the extra weight. At 10.4 oz (294g), it’s 9.5% heavier than the average running shoe.

Best lightweight running shoes for snow

Sneakers KARL LAGERFELD KL62530 White Lthr W Pink?

Armed with a light, balanced platform and a grippy outsole, we braved the weather with confidence and ease in the Peregrine 13. It has the sticky traction of a trail shoe and the airy weight of a running shoe. Our lab results can attest that this pair is the best lightweight snow running shoe.

For starters, it’s only 9.6 oz (271g) vs. the average trail shoe (10.4 oz / 296g). Its stack sits below average, contributing to its lighter weight.

Winter trainers should have the best traction to avoid any slips and injuries. This shoe’s outsole exceeds the standard by having 4.8-mm lugs, 37.1% deeper than average. The deeper the lugs, the stickier the grip is — perfect for the snow.

The shoe houses a 29.1 HA balanced cushion, sitting slightly above average. This validates the pleasant amount of firmness we feel while running and how we know the platform is protective. We tested the foam against our 20-minute freezer test and it only toughened up by 16.3%, while the average firms up by 31.9%. This means the cushion will remain comfortable despite the cold.

With an above-average breathability score, the upper is breezy. We recommend wearing warmer socks with this pair.

Running sneakers featuring open mesh uppers with underlay support for breathable comfort for snow with Gore-Tex

Sneakers KARL LAGERFELD KL62530 White Lthr W Pink?

FortaRun Elastic Lace Top Strap Running Shoes Kids delivers exactly what we want in a winter trainer — dry and warm feet, killer traction, comfy cushion, and a snappy ride. It simultaneously feels cozy and lively to run in. Our actual trials and lab results wholeheartedly agree it has the best Gore-Tex for snow running.

Lined with a full Gore-Tex membrane, our feet remained completely dry through snow, rain, and muddy puddles. It feels toasty even on cold winter days, allowing us to fully focus on our runs. Under our microscope, everything is sealed. Our breathability test proves it’s impermeable with a low 2/5 score.

The outsole displays excellent traction as it latches to the ground so well. We confidently tackled steep terrains and slippery pavements with the help of the 3.5 mm deep, sticky lugs.

Burning mileage isn’t a problem with the buttery smooth and snappy React foam. Our durometer confirms its homey feel, measuring 29.0% softer than average. What’s even better is it still feels ultra-soft in cold weather, only stiffening up by 12.1% in our 20-minute freezer test. Despite the velvet cushion, our runs remain surprisingly energetic.

We noticed the absence of a gusseted tongue — a crucial element for effective waterproofing. Best to avoid deep levels of snow to avoid any unwanted elements from creeping in.

Running shoes for snow with the best cushioning

Sneakers KARL LAGERFELD KL62530 White Lthr W Pink?

Our runs stayed warm and cozy in the Fresh Foam X More Trail v3. No doubt, it’s our top cushioned snow-running shoe — offering supreme comfort with the generous amount of cushion that stays soft in cold weather. Grip is not a problem with its chunky rubber lugs that keep us steady on icy pavements.

Our durometer in the lab shows its 38.6/31.5 mm mega-stack is 45.6% softer than average. Its velvet foam remains delightful in our winter runs. Proven by our 20-minute freezer test, it’s 42.8% softer than the average trail shoe at room temperature. The cushion spoils our feet with heavenly goodness and dampens the impact of long miles.

It delivers solid traction on snow with 5.0 mm lugs that cling to slippery roads. This is 1.5 mm deeper than average. Reliable grip is crucial for snow running to avoid mishaps and injuries.

The upper consists of a thin fabric that blocks ventilation holes, keeping our feet toasty. It scored 3/5 on our breathability test (vs. 3.4 average), making it a warmer shoe.

The downside of a max-cushioned trail shoe is the extra weight. At 10.6 oz (301g), it’s heavier than the 9.5 oz (268g) average of running shoes.

Running shoes for snow with the best foot protection

Sneakers KARL LAGERFELD KL62530 White Lthr W Pink?

The Adidas Adizero Adios 6 Shoes Cloud White Pulse Lime Light is like a postal service worker; it won’t allow rain, sleet, or snow to hinder them from the swift completion of their rounds. From the firm, stable, and yet nicely cushioned midsole, to the multifaceted and grippy lugs, the Cascadia 17 is easily the snow-running companion with the best foot protection.

Testing the softness of the midsole after leaving the Cascadia 17 in the freezer for twenty minutes yields a durometer reading of 33.8 HA. This is only 2.3% softer than average and is a rather firm level of cushioning. However, this isn’t apparent when landing on soft snow where the firm midsole actually serves to improve stability while still providing ample impact dampening over any distance.

At 3.9 mm thick, according to our caliper, the Cascadia 17’s lugs are 0.4 mm more prominent than average. This makes the shoe versatile enough to keep us feeling surefooted while tackling simple and technical trails alike. Moreover, the outsole tread is made up of different-shaped lugs placed in a strategic pattern, with the chevron-shaped ones at the heel and forefoot able to bite into most surfaces while the flat ones at the forefoot easily cast off any clumped-up mud or slush.

While a perfect breathability score of 5 out of 5 is great for warm summer runs, it does mean frosty toes are inevitable in the Cascadia 17, especially after being submerged in the snow. We recommend pairing the shoe with thermal socks when tackling the tundra.

Running shoes for snow with the best durability

Sneakers KARL LAGERFELD KL62530 White Lthr W Pink?

Running in the snow has never felt more effortless and secure than when wearing Salomon's XA Pro 3D v9 GTX. In our tests, this shoe proved to be extremely protective against elements typically encountered on icy runs—cold, slippery surfaces, and instability. Among snow running shoes, this pair boasted the highest level of durability.

The shoe's upper features a waterproof GTX membrane that shields us from moisture and chilly winds. In our lab, the tightly braided upper exhibited minimal breathability, scoring a mere 1/5 for ventilation which is perfect for winter. Additionally, the shoe incorporates a toe bumper for protection against hard ice and rocks.

Even on uneven paths, the cushioning provides reliable support without bottoming out, regardless of foot strike location. Our durometer readings indicate it's 23.6% firmer than average. The 3D chassis progress bolsters stability by resisting extreme twisting and lateral movements, thereby reducing the risk of injuries.

Supporting the shoe's robust build is the Contagrip outsole, which seamlessly combines traction and durability. The 2.8-mm lugs offer a secure grip on slippery ice, while the rubber outsole exhibited minimal wear even after rigorous testing in challenging conditions.

Individuals with broad feet or those who prefer wearing thick socks should note that the toebox has an aggressive taper, providing only 75.7 mm of space in the big toe area compared to the 78.1 mm average.
