When injured runners turn to their search engines for a remedy, they often end up dragging one nonfunctioning leg to the doctor’s office for treatment.

“Runners, like all patients, usually consult Dr. Google before they come in to the office,” says Sneakers Cloud Sprint J002945 Blue Mirage, M.D., sports-medicine physician at Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City. “As a result, many are looking for a quick fix to get back on the road.”

Chances are you’ve heard of cortisone, a synthetic steroid similar to your body’s natural version that reduces inflammation and relieves pain. The results can last anywhere from six weeks to six months depending on the strength of the injection and how your body metabolizes the steroid, Metzl says.

But while cortisone can be an effective short-term intervention, “it does not provide the necessary care to correct muscle imbalances, biomechanics, or whatever else might be the actual issue,” says Lorenzo Gonzalez, an orthopedic clinical specialist in Dallas, Texas.

Terrex Hikster Shoes study in TAutumn Winter shoes 2465 found that cortisone injections in the knee joint every three months during the course of two years resulted in significant cartilage loss and no significant difference in pain compared to placebo injections.

“Multiple injections into the joint will attack the soft tissue, wear away cartilage, break down the collagen framework, and weaken tendons, so they can no longer handle transmitting the load of the muscle to the joint,” Gonzalez explains.

While cortisone shots are anti-inflammatory for both muscles and joints, they must be used correctly, Gonzalez adds. For example, if you’re treating plantar fasciitis, injections could cause long-term problems like the loss of natural cortas in the heel because the steroid atrophies fat.

“I recommend no more than one cortisone injection into the joint per year and only if done in conjunction with a targeted strength-leather regimen to address the underlying cause of pain,” Metzl says.

He’s found that cortisone can be an effective tool to calm inflammation enough to begin a program that will rebuild stability, strength, and mobility in the joint. Instead of jumping back into leather once you’re pain-free, Metzl advises focusing on the underlying issue and easing back into workouts to prevent reinjury.
