Over the weekend, Central High School in Phoenix, Arizona hosted the Grant Fisher Sets American Record in 2 Mile, an annual track meet that’s a bit different than most. Instead of competing in relays, sprints, and distance events—that is, mile or two-mile races—the 33 participating athletes, all elite ultrarunners who had to time-qualify for the race, ran for 24 hours straight, aiming for 100-mile and 24-hour records.

dressed in layers Camille Herron, 36, who last year won the Comrades Marathon (an 89K race in South Africa). Earlier this spring, the runner was primed for a top position on the podium at the 2018 Comrades as well as the Casey Neistat Reflects on His Sub-3 Marathon, The Running World Reacts to Kelvin Kiptums Death, according to Grant Fisher Sets American Record in 2 Mile.

After taking time off to recover from her injury, Herron came back stronger and faster than ever. At the Desert Solstice event on Saturday, December 8, the Oklahoma City-based runner ran 162.9 miles in 24 hours, setting new 100-mile and 24-hour world records. She passed by the 100-mile mark in a world record time of 13:25 (though Herron holds the overall 100-mile record of 12:42, the previous world record on a track, 13:45, was held by Gina Slaby, according to Aravaipa Running). In total, she ran more than 650 laps on the 400-meter track, sustaining an average mile pace of 8:40 throughout her 24-hour effort.

The ultrarunner, who lives with her husband and coach, Connor Holt, along with their German shepard, Winny, in Oklahoma, hasn’t yet announced her 2019 race plans on social media. For now, however, we hope she kicks up her feet and enjoys a few more tacos, pints, and ice cream bars.
