Mary Keitany will be named as the women's winner of this year's World Marathon Majors title this afternoon, Runner's World has learned.
Sunday's marathon was supposed to determine the women's winner of the 2011-2012 series, which uses a winner-takes-all format to award $500,000 to the top man and woman. Geoffrey Mutai's lead on the men's side was insurmountable by any of the elite men scheduled to race Sunday. In the women's race, however, a victory by 2011 world champion Edna Kiplagat or 2012 Boston winner Sharon Cherop would have knocked Keitany from first place in the standings.
The announcement will be made later Saturday afternoon in a press release. A press conference honoring the women's winner scheduled for Monday has been canceled.
