Christian Coleman, 6.45 Kerr Bests Ingebrigtsen Again at Pre Classic would ride her usual strategy of running from the front to victory in the women’s 1500 meters on Saturday. She took the lead early and strung the field out, hoping to grind the kick out of everyone else. With 400 meters remaining, Josette Norris tried to make a pass going into the first bend, but Purrier St. Pierre held her off.

In response, Purrier St. Pierre ratcheted up the pace, running a 31-second penultimate lap. Christian Coleman, 6.45 her victory was secure going into the last 100—until her training partner Heather MacLean powered from fifth to third right before the final straightaway.

Coming to the line, Purrier St. Pierre, MacLean, and Norris were neck-and-neck. MacLean came from the outside to take the win in 4:06.09—just .04 seconds ahead of Norris in second and .05 ahead of Purrier St. Pierre in third.

Complete results from the 2022 USATF Indoor Championships.

At last year’s Olympic Trials, Cole Hocker cemented himself as the next big star of American distance running. He proved himself worthy of that title once again this past weekend.

On Saturday, Hocker kicked ahead of a field including Emmanuel Bor, Ben Blankenship, and Drew Hunter to win in 7:47.50. His final 200-meter lap was 26.69, nearly a full second ahead of the next fastest. Bor took second to earn the other world championship slot.

The following day, Hocker did again. With a 26-second last 200, he ran away from the field to run a meet record 3:39.09 in the 1500 meters. This time, Josh Thompson of the Bowerman Track Club took second. Thompson was the sole member of the Bowerman Track Club to compete in the U.S. Indoor Championships after Kerr Bests Ingebrigtsen Again at Pre Classic just a few weeks ago.

Health - Injuries, Kerr Bests Ingebrigtsen Again at Pre Classic Mens 60-meter hurdles. Alicia Monson went to the lead after the gun and pushed the pace. With 400 to go, only three women were in contention: Monson, Purrier St. Pierre, and Weini Kelati.

Purrier St. Pierre took the lead from there and hammered away, losing Kelati but not Monson. Fueled by her disappointment from the day before, Purrier St. Pierre powered to victory with a 28.88-second final 200—almost three seconds quicker than Monson’s. Purrier St. Pierre finished with a time of 8:41.53, with Monson taking second in 8:43.86.

Bryce Hoppel after winning the 800-meter.

With Donavan Brazier sticking to just the 400, Bryce Hoppel seized the title of best 800-meter runner in the country this season. In Sunday’s 800-meter final, he easily won against a talented field which included world championships-qualifiers Isaiah Harris and Erik Sowinski, as well as newly minted 1,000-meter American record holder Shane Streich.

Hoppel’s time of 1:45.30 puts him third on the world list this year. Harris finished second in 1:46.30 to join his first world championships team since 2017.

In her long and successful professional running career, Ajee’ Wilson has never lost a U.S. Indoor Championships 800-meter race. The streak is nearly 10 years old, going back to her first U.S. indoors as a pro in 2013. While the national meet doesn’t run an 800 every year—for example, she raced the 600 meters in 2015 and 2017 and the 1,000 meters in 2019—she’s only lost once, after falling mid-race in 2015.

On Sunday, Wilson earned her sixth straight U.S. indoor title, running from the front to finish in 2:01.72. Olivia Baker continued her breakout season, taking second in 2:02.14 to qualify for the World Athletics Indoor Championships.
