On this week’s Runner’s World Show:

  • We head out to Brookline, Massachusetts for a Friday morning November Project workout along with 250 or so of the closest friends you never knew you had. Editors Katie Neitz and Brian Dalek explain why all that suffering and support is so darn good for you. (1:25)
  • Editor-in-Chief David Willey talks with Brogan Graham and Bojan Mandaric, cofounders of November Project, about their free, weather-be-damned, heavy-on-the-hugs fitness movement and their new book, November Project: The Book(9:00)
  • The Kick wraps up the London Marathon, from the overall winners to some of our favorite costumed runners, a freaky fast old guy, and a race call for the ages. (33:00)

Get Up. Hug Somebody. Run Hills.

Friday morning hills are a November Project staple.
Check out this great video of the November Project Harvard Stadium workout.

If it's Friday morning in Brookline, Massachusetts, you will find many, many November Project people running up and down Summit Avenue. But that’s only after everyone gathers at the top of the hill, bounces up and down, repeats how glad he or she is to be there, then doles out some hugs.

“I gave three bear hugs to strangers before I had my coffee,” says editor Brian Dalek. “It was strangely motivating before a killer workout.”

Killer indeed. We take you up, over, and down the full hills with stair spice workout, and editor Katie Neitz explains why doing something that hard with a bunch of strangers can make you a stronger, faster runner.

November Project
Running is never boring with the keeping-it-weird NP cofounders Brogan Graham (left) and Bojan Mandaric.

Did Brogan Graham and Bojan Mandaric have any idea, back in November 2011, that their impromptu stay-fit-plan known as November Project would eventually grow to include 30 cities across the country and the world?

“No clue. Absolutely zero clue,” says Mandaric. “I mean, my beard is longer now, but that’s pretty much the only thing I could have expected. Everything else November Project related, it was just...it’s been a wild dream.”

The pair talk with Editor-in-Chief David Willey about the growth of November Project, why they think it resonates with so many people, and why their Boston-born brainchild will always be free. They also discuss their newest project, November Project The Book: Inside the Grassroots Fitness Movement That's Taking Over the World (Rodale).
