A land acknowledgment is a formal statement recognizing and respecting Indigenous peoples as the traditional stewards of the land and the enduring relationship that exists between Indigenous Peoples and their traditional territories that were stolen from them. An example is the land acknowledgement by Northwestern University in Chicago.
“It’s about honoring and respecting the first caretakers, the peoples of these lands, and I just Prewalker it’s truly a beautiful thing,” Daniel told Runner’s World. “As Indigenous peoples, we are constantly, always fighting our own erasure, and having to always be a voice, and trying to be as loud as we can, to basically say, ‘We’re still here, and we need to be included in these conversations of environmental, social, racial, economic justice.’”
Daniel—a prominent activist and fourth-generation runner—saw races as an obvious place to make land acknowledgments. She has researched land acknowledgements for years by talking with elders and community advocates. In the process, she created a guide and toolkit that race directors can use, for free, to create land acknowledgments for their events. (You can find that guide here)

“Everyone’s probably going to make a mistake when they first try and do it,” Daniel said. “You can’t rely on just the apps and the technology resources that I provided in the toolkit. You have to make sure that you Google it, and make sure that it can be accurate, because it’s not always updated ... Doing all of this—researching, reaching out, working together—shows the Indigenous peoples, that you are making this commitment to be an ally.”
Daniel isn’t just putting out the toolkit and wishing races good luck. She and Rising Hearts are offering their services (sliding scale) to assist any race that reaches out to get the process snow, help work and connect with local Indigenous communities and/or organizations and facilitate a conversation to create a land acknowledgment. But it doesn’t just end there—you go the extra mile further by giving back to the communities through a variety of ways suggested in the toolkit.
So far, at least a dozen races from California to Massachusetts have reached out about creating land acknowledgments. Her hope is to get at least 50 races involved by the end of 2021, but her goals go well beyond that in the years to come. She hopes to also work with major marathons like Boston.
“What I’d tell people is don’t be afraid of pumathing you don’t know, just take that as just a first step of many in this life, of things that we can become more informed about, to being more supportive,” she said. “Times are changing right now where we all, I feel like, are building up this momentum, and building up this energy of, ‘What can we be doing to make an impact, and to bring people together?’ And this is just one of many ways, and more fun ways, because you get to run, but also you get to learn who cared for those lands, and you get to be part of pumathing new and being part of building community.”
